Broward DSA Leadership Positions

Candidate Applications close September 8th

Chapter By-Laws Specify the following requirements and structure for Broward DSA Leadership:

Each officer must be a member of the Local Chapter and be current in their dues at the time of election and throughout the duration of their term. The term of office shall be one year or until their successors are elected.  The officers shall not all be cisgender men; shall include at least one member of the LGBTQIA+ community; shall include at least one person of color (POC); and shall include at least one woman. In the event that adequate representation cannot be attained among the officers, the positions will be open to individuals of any background. No member shall hold more than one office at any given time, with the exception of temporary vacancies.*

The officers of the Local Chapter shall be separated into two groups, the steering committee and the organizing committee. 

The officers of the steering committee shall be two co-chairs, a labor wg chair, an electoral wg chair, a mutual aid working group chair, and a political development chair. Should the Local Chapter vote to take on a priority campaign, the elected campaign chair will have a spot on the steering committee through the duration of the campaign. 

The officers for the organizing committee shall be 3 at-large members, the communications chair, the treasurer, the secretary, and the new membershipship chair.

Co-Chair (x2)

_{There will be two co-chairs of Broward DSA, any responsibilities listed only needs to be done by one co-chair. Their responsibilities will include communicating with National DSA leadership and staff, as well as attending regional and national DSA calls. They shall attend PB/TC and Miami DSA general body meetings. They shall chair general body meetings and steering committee meetings. They shall fill in as chair when others can not perform working group duties or positions are vacant. They shall attend Organizing Committee meetings. They shall appoint election chairs and HGOs. They will check the chapter’s email, texts, voicemails, and social media DMs; this will be a shared responsibility with the Communications chair. They will work with other Steering Committee members to help develop action plans for working groups and campaign projects.}

Working Group Chairs

Labor, Electoral, and Mutual Aid

The working group chairs elected to the steering committees will facilitate projects approved by the working groups, chair working group meetings, phonebank working group membership before events and meetings, meet regularly with the political development chair to discuss members of their working group, and communicate with the secretary to ensure the chapter calendar is accurate. The campaign chairs will represent the organization alongside the chapter co-chairs to relevant organizations, such as local labor unions.

Each of the three working groups will have one chair elected to serve on the steering committee. If the working group is merged with any other South Florida DSA chapter, our chapter will only have one elected chair. If our working group operates alone then a co-chair will be elected at the next working group meeting, this co-chair will share working group responsibilities with their co-chair but will not sit on the steering committee.

Political Development Chair

The Political Development Chair’s work will facilitate the growth of existing Broward DSA members. They will be responsible for the development of chapter wide political education and skills based training. They will regularly meet with working group chairs to track membership development and coach the working group leads on how to escalate member’s roles in the organization.

Communications Coordinator

The communications chair will chair the communications committee. Their responsibilities will include social media posts, chapter emails, and the chapter newsletter.

New Membership Coordinator

The new membership chair will be responsible for recruiting and welcoming new members. They will ensure all new members receive a welcome call and run an annual recommitment drive for lapsed members. They will also facilitate DSA 101s for new/interested members. They will also be in charge of the chapter’s tabling: training tablers, make sure tabling supplies are stocked, and find places for Broward DSA to table.

Chapter Secretary

The chapter secretary will take meeting notes and make sure they are easily accessible for membership. They will maintain the website and chapter calendar, including creating zoom meetings for virtual/hybrid meetings. They will make sure quorum is maintained and track meeting attendance in solidarity tech. They will be responsible for rechartering the organization annually. 

Chapter Treasurer

The Treasurer shall be responsible for the funds and financial records of the Local Chapter. All funds collected by the Local Chapter shall be turned over to the Treasurer, who will hold these funds in a secure place until it is possible to deposit the funds in a credit union or bank account under the name of the Local Chapter. The Treasurer shall prepare budgets and financial reports for consideration at Local Chapter Meetings and as requested by the Steering Committee, and ensure the Local Chapter’s regulatory compliance. In cooperation with the Membership Coordinator, the Treasurer shall be responsible for ensuring that membership dues are current.  

The Treasurer shall create and document policies and procedures for carrying out their duties and for maintaining healthy Local Chapter finances. The Treasurer shall transfer to their successor the documented policies and procedures, financial records and reports, and access to financial accounts securely.

At-Large Organizing Committee Members

There will be 3 at-large members of the organizing committee. Their primary responsibility is event facilitation: securing venues, ordering/picking up food, arriving first to set up, day of rsvp confirmation, and more. They will also support the other 4 members of the organizing committee and cover the responsibilities of vacant organizing committee positions. At least one at large member shall attend weekly steering committee meetings to provide updates.
